To celebrate CDR’s 50th anniversary, we are sponsoring a poetry contest. The topics for the poems can be dance, CDR, 50th anniversary, ECD, contra, music, or musical instruments used for country dancing. All poems must be clean. Original haikus and limericks can be submitted by email any time during September. There is no limit on the number of poems which can be sent in by a single person. Send poems to
A three-line, non-rhyming poem. Traditionally, the first and third lines have 5 syllables, and the second line has 7 syllables (17 syllables total).
A five-line humorous poem with a strict (AABBA) rhyme scheme and a bouncy rhythm (two unstressed syllables followed by one stressed syllable). The first, second, and fifth lines are longer with three beats, while the third and fourth lines are shorter with two beats.
This contest is for fun, so rigid adherence to syllables and meter is not required. Dancers will be able to vote electronically during October for their favorite poems. Winners will be announced in November and will receive 50th anniversary merch.
