The Country Dancers of Rochester have been motivated by the Black Lives Matters movement to understand the roots, sources, influences, and biases of our favorite past-time and why today it is a very “white” activity. We wish to explore our own biases and make a difference in our own communities.
Inspired by the work being done by communities like Portland Intown Contra and CDSS, CDR started an Anti-racism Study Group. We have identified four basic goals of this group:
- history/research;
- seeking out BIPOC musicians;
- Community engagement/events, and
- hiring a consultant.
