Details
We enjoy featuring local performers and we do so this week. Maxine McDonald started attending local dances as a teenager and her enthusiasm led her to learn to be a dance caller and to take up piano. Evan De Smitt discovered dancing as a young man and has been honing his calling skills at our local caller’s collective and at the CDSS caller’s workshop last summer. Over and Under, a long-time local band led by Roger Cass, will provide a fun collection of traditional and contemporary jigs and reels.
Callers
Maxine McDonald
Young Maxine McDonald calling has a locked-in sense of timing that is never off, and never obtrusive. Quiet and unassuming, she puts the music first for a sweet evening. Her enthusiasm for the dance is contagious, and stems from a love of historical re-enactment at the Genesee Country Village and Museum–and a delight in twirling on the dance floor!
Evan De Smitt
One of Rochester’s seasoned callers, Evan brings great timing from his experiences playing saxophone in marching bands. His lovely, clear, resonant voice carries well, and he is very attentive to the dancers.

Roger Cass (Keyboard)
Roger Cass leads Over and Under, a band with a long history of playing for dances in Rochester. Over and Under got its name by playing for many years for the Over and Under Square Dance Club where you had to be over . . . or under . . . 40 to be a member. They also played regular gigs at McGraw’s Pub and the Fiddler’s Fair. Specialties are traditional and contemporary jigs and reels, jazz standards, country, vocals and musical jokes.
